With the latest instalment in the James Bond franchise – No Time To Die, having been postponed for the third time due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we decided that 8 October 2021 is too far away to wait for another dose of stunning spy vehicles. Therefore, we are about to revisit the direct prequel to No Time To Die – Spectre and explore the wonderful cars in Spectre. From 007’s Aston Martin DB10 to the iconic Bond villain vehicle, Jaguar C-X75 – there is plenty for classic car lovers to see.
Aston Martin DB10
Who drives it: James Bond (portrayed by Daniel Craig)
Where is it seen in the movie: James Bond decides to help himself to Q’s latest supercar and drives off in the British-made Aston Martin (not the most low-profile car to steal, we have to admit, but then again, it is James Bond we are talking about). So, 007 gets himself involved in a furious city-centre chase in the beautiful capital of Italy. He manages to escape villainous Mr. Hinx by relying on the speed of the sleek Aston Martin DB10.
About the car: Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin CEO called DB10 “one of the rarest cars ever created”. The model was designed especially for the movie by an elite team of engineers at Aston Martin’s Gaydon Headquarters in the UK. The British manufacturer wanted to make an impression for the 50th anniversary of the brand’s partnership with the franchise by creating a classic James Bond car. We’d say – mission accomplished.
The specs: The Aston Martin DB10 specs are truly impressive. With a 4.7-litre V8 engine under the bonnet and a maximum speed of 190mph, this beauty can accelerate from 0-62mph in about four seconds. The stylish carbon fibre body of the DB10 is fitted with a luxury leather interior with carbon fibre and aluminium detailing.
Can I buy it: No. Only one of the 10 prototypes created for the movie was put up for sale and it went for a staggering 2.4million pounds at auction in 2018. Bear in mind that this is a collection vehicle only. Since the Aston Martin DB10 has not undergone the necessary road testing, it cannot be driven on a public road. So, yes – the person who spent nearly £2.5 million on it cannot drive it.
At least, all the money went to a good cause. The proceedings were donated to Medecins sans Frontieres and The United Nations Mine Action Service.
Aston Martin DB10 Cost: £2.4 million
Jaguar C-X75
Who drives it: Mr. Hinx (portrayed by Dave Bautista)
Where is it seen in the movie: The baddie chasing James Bond down the streets of Rome was none other than Mr.. Hinx – the assassin, brought to life on the big screen by Hollywood actor and former WWE superstar, Dave Bautista. This is where the bright orange Jaguar C-X75 appears for the first time in the movie. It takes a stunning prototype sports car to beat another.
About the car: Just like the DB10, the C-X75 is also a prototype vehicle. The concept of the C-X75 was first unveiled in 2010 with the idea to enter production in 2011 but the whole project ended with only five example vehicles of the two-seat, hybrid-electric car being made. However, when the 24th instalment of the James Bond franchise was set to come out in 2015, Jaguar invested in producing four stunt vehicles based on the C-X75 model. The stunt car used in the filming of the movie made an appearance at the Mexican Grand Prix in 2015 when Felipe Massa did a test drive of the C-X75 on the track.
The specs: The stunt version of Jaguar C-X75 has a maximum speed of 200mph, powered by a mighty V8 engine. To be able to survive the filming of the chase scenes, the car was outfitted with a tubular, extra-thick steel tubing spaceframe and had an extra-travel suspension added. The 0-60 mph speed is just 3.4 seconds.
Can I buy it: No. Well, maybe, if you have a little over a million to spate. One of the stunt cars, actually the first one ever made, was sold to a British collector in 2016. He then offered it up for auction in Abu Dhabi in November 2019 with a required price of $800,000 – $1,200,000. As of today, there still is no information available about the fate of the car at the auction, which leads us to believe it may not have been sold.
Cost: $800,000 – $1,200,000
Range Rover Sport SVR
Who drives it: The baddies.
Where is it seen in the movie: Remember that snowy car chase in the Austrian Alps when James Bond heroically saves his Spectre Bondgirl Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) after she gets kidnapped by Mr.. Hinx (Dave Bautista)? The bad guys were driving black Range Rover Sports during the pursuit…while 007 was chasing them in a plane down a snow slope.
About the car: Range Rover Sport is a Range Rover’s luxury range SUV which was first produced in 2005 and was later replaced by a second generation in 2013. Of course, the SVR version you see in Spectre has had some major enhancements in comparison to its publicly-available counterpart. Fun fact about the Range Rover Sport in the Spectre is that nine cars were stolen from Jaguar Landrover in Germany before they even made it to filming. The brazen car thieves reportedly got their hands on a lot of cars worth €800,000. Where’s James Bond when you need him?
The specs: Speaking of those major improvements, the Range Rover Sports SVR is supercharged by a 5.0-litre, V8 engine which takes it to a maximum speed of 197 mph with 550 hp under the hood. The SUV was equipped with additional LED lights to make it more easily visible during the scenes.
Can I buy it: Yes, if you want to drive one of the cars in Spectre, the Range Rover Sports is amongst your more affordable options with a starting price tag of £99,620 for a new vehicle.
Cost: From £99,620
Land Rover’s Big Foot Defender
Who drives it: The baddies.
Where is it seen in the movie: Still in the snow-covered mountain stops of the Alps, the villains from Spectre make their way through the harsh winter terrain using Land Rover’s impressive, black, Big Foot Defender.
About the car: Land Rover’s Big Foot Defender is based on a 2014 Land Rover Defender SVX. Hence the OO07 SVX registration plate you can see in the movie. The car driven in the scene was sold at auction in 2018 to none other than celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. The British culinary star reportedly spent between £220,000 – 250,000 to drive off in one of the original cars in Spectre.
The specs: The Range Rover SVR wasn’t the only British car to be heavily modified for its appearance in Spectre. Land Rover’s Defender Big Foot, was given a set of 37″ off-road wheels and tyres, as well as added body protection and a tailor-made suspension, all designed and built by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations team. The engine also had a major upgrade from its usual 120hp version, with the movie version, producing 185bhp.
Can I buy it: Unless Gordon Ramsey agrees to sell his James Bond villain car to you, you won’t be getting the original movie vehicle. However, you can buy a second-hand Landrover Defender SVX, if you’d like.
Landrover Defender SVX Cost: Used from £45,000
Those are the most memorable cars that we see on the screen in Spectre. What a way for the British car industry to make its mark on the Bond franchise once again, right? We can’t wait to see how the 25th James Bond movie compares to this impressive car line-up.
